ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with organisational change towards digital distance education (DDE), facilitated through operating model design and deals with an overview of operating models and their development. Considering universities from an operating model perspective helps to understand the dynamics of why universities work as they do, and to demonstrate what might need to change for DDE to be applied. The accessible, scalable and personalised vision of DDE for higher education that engages, enlightens and empowers students is progressive. The form of change needed for adopting DDE is likely to be complex and large-scale, which, in any estimation, requires a formal approach. The move towards Systematic will commit to operating model design in order to ensure the overall outcome resembles DDE and that each subsequent change event complements those that follow. In change management terms, moving towards DDE is a transformative activity rather than an incremental one.
