ABSTRACT

Prince K'ang was the ninth son of Hwei Tsung and just twenty years of age when, seeing the throne vacant through the capture of his father and brother, he became Emperor under the title of Kau Tsung. In October the Kins were on their return march to China with overwhelming forces. All the towns on the north of the Yellow River fell into their hands. The Kins, having burnt Hangchow and collected the immense booty that they had plundered from the regions they had conquered, proceeded north on their way to their own country. In the year A. D. 1131 the statesman Ts'in-kwei, who had been captured by the Kins about four years before, made his appearance at the court of Kau Tsung. The year A. D. 1140 was a glorious one for the arms of the Sungs. Wu-kiai obtained great victories over the Kins in Shensi, and Yoh-fei thoroughly routed them in Kiangsi.
