ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes to depart from the standard regional and cultural economic tools and explores the economic, artistic, social and political aspects of Miami Beach’s revitalization plan. Visualize a run down American city in the late seventies where all the retail stores are boarded up and the street comers serve as full functioning bathrooms to the homeless. Visionary artists and preservationists migrate to the city to rebuild empty warehouses and buildings and make them into performing arts theaters, concert halls, nightclubs and restaurants. The arts-led regeneration program in Miami Beach is an ongoing process that allows the researcher to both analyze and be an active part of the phenomenon. The empirical estimation should include a more specific rent variable, conduct a survey on tourism needs and satisfaction for the city of Miami Beach, and include a better formulation and measurement of the international tourist market.
