ABSTRACT

This chapter draws together the main conclusions of the preceding discussion and brings into sharp relief the advantages of a reconstructed conception of Aristotelian flourishing, as seen from philosophical, psychological and educational perspectives. More specifically, the chapter casts a retrospective glance over the arguments I have made throughout, by way of rehearsing, reflecting upon and augmenting them. The first section simply reviews the main themes and points of emphasis. Notably, in this retrospective roadmap I focus specifically on areas where my theory of flourishing in education departs from the Aristotelian script. The second section delineates twelve major advantages of flourishing accounts. The third section ponders various unresolved problems and challenges. The fourth section revisits and reconsiders some educational and political themes that are intimately tied to the ideal of flourishing. The final section offers brief concluding remarks about where we need to head next.
