ABSTRACT

The chapter explores issues pertinent to the SENCO’s role in developing inclusion. It starts by considering the use of language in relation to those with SEND, and continues by debating issues around the concepts and practice of inclusion and the tension between inclusion and the standards agenda. The impact of the SEND Code (2015) (DfE/DoH) for parental choice is then discussed. Next the SENCo’s responsibility for development and training of staff, and the SENCo’s own training needs, are described. The chapter then draws together themes from earlier chapters, showing how SENCos’ skills and knowledge might help them further develop inclusive practice. Activity 5 evaluates training.
