ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the management of effective support. First, the nature of SEND support and the changing role of the Teaching Assistant (TA) are described and debated, in the light of extensive recent research on TA deployment and practice. Then the chapter outlines the role of class teachers in working with TAs and managing support for their pupils. The remainder of the chapter discusses the SENCo’s role and responsibilities in managing and training TAs, monitoring additional provision and interventions and reviewing school support policy. Suggestions are made for improving whole-school practice. Activity 3 is an audit to review support policy and practice. Activity 4 is a checklist for SENCos on managing support.
