ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the findings from the second phase of the project focused on the transition of students with disabilities from universities to the workplace. The disability employment gap is evident in several studies. Employment rates for individuals with disabilities are reportedly lower than for those without disabilities. Research shows positive employment outcomes for youth with disabilities when some strategies are implemented at the point of transition. Personal attributes proved to be important in the success of participants to manage the transition to employment. Securing employment is important for youth with disabilities. Transition programs should be properly planned by universities, government and employers while students with disabilities are at university. The South African employment environment has made strides in providing opportunities for youth. A number of obstacles are experienced by youth with disabilities, which can be traced to the South African social context and the way persons with disabilities are viewed.
