ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the research study on which the book is based. The study sought to explore critical pedagogy as an approach to empower students from ethnic minority communities in Hong Kong. The chapter introduces readers the concerns around schooling for ethnic minority students in Hong Kong, the entrenched inequities in the schooling system and the market-based reforms it has undergone, and how the author became involved in creating an intervention through critical pedagogy. Additionally, two narrative strands are set up that become woven throughout the book: how struggle for change was taken on by teachers and students, and how the author also underwent personal dilemmas and transformation. Finally, the chapter outlines the book while reminding readers of limitations arising from the situated nature of critical pedagogy: it cannot be standardized and does not provide any quick fixes or step-by-step instructions.
