ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how and where the author carried out research, and how ethnographic tools can be used to define criticality, understand students’ worlds, and take new forms of action in commitment to social justice. The chapter furthers the narrative of the author’s challenges and transformation in carrying out the study. First, the chapter outlines the study’s critical ethnographic method and how it was used by the author both as a research tool and as a tool to develop his teaching. Second, the chapter describes the two schools where research and teaching happened and gives an overview of the research process. Third, the chapter tells the story of a radical rebirth the author experienced which led him to a more committed stance toward students as a researcher and teacher. Ethical considerations of the research as carried out within the critical ethnography method are discussed.
