ABSTRACT

This chapter explores limits and possibilities for furthering critical pedagogy in and out of Hong Kong in response to neoliberal conditions. First, the chapter recaps tumultuous events that followed the author’s departure from the second research site and provides updates on some of the participants discussed in the book. Second, the chapter advocates for better meeting students’ needs not through standardization, rather through deconstruction of oppressive social conditions and school practices, and construction of new critical pedagogy theory and practice. Third, the chapter argues for systemic changes in policy, curriculum, and teaching that uncritically uphold competition and individualism, and that instead take more consideration for nurturing community and understanding of diversity in Hong Kong. The book ends with a reaffirmation of critical hope, a form of hope that provides material justification for the belief in social justice, nurtures resilience and strength to pursue a painful struggle, and values solidarity with and sacrifice for others.
