ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 presents the rationale of the volume and develops the book overview. It introduces the question of counterterrorism with respect to the state of the art in terrorism studies and culturalist approaches to security by highlighting major gaps in the respective literatures. It follows a description of the book’s contribution to the discipline by building on and complementing previous studies. Specifically, it raises questions linked to the definitions of terrorism and the ways they are developed in order to introduce the relevance of empirical research. Finally, the main questions addressed by the research are presented, as well as the content and structure of the book.
