Reading the telegrams over the weekend, the PUS was very struck by the dramatically differing reactions in Soviet Bloc countries to recent events in China. 1 To take the two extremes: the official reaction in Hungary (Budapest Tel. no. 291) has been strongly critical of the Chinese leadership’s handling of the crisis; in East Germany, by contrast (East Berlin tel. No. 169), 2 no deviation from the official Chinese line is being permitted.
