ABSTRACT

Responses to the question “From what did you suffer most in school?” are presented as modern, individual narrative reports of students suffering in school. Reports are organized under broad categories that emerged through the intersection of lived experiences rendered through accounts that associate the suffering experienced by being in school. Categories of suffering in school experienced by students include: affront to personhood/injury to dignity; anxiety, stress and fear; struggles with learning; personal, cultural and social identity; companionship and isolation; corporeal disaffection/physicality; lateral violence: bullying and discrimination; teacher indiscretion, impropriety and transgression; and solicitude.
