ABSTRACT

Being appointed to the board of a company is often thought of as an honour and the ultimate career accolade crowning a successful career. In many ways this reaction is correct, it is an honour to be given the chance to guide a company towards success, but with the honour comes new responsibilities. Usually directors arrive on a Board of Directors via one of two routes, promotion from within the company, often following a successful career in a specialist or technical department e.g., Marketing or Flight Operations, or by appointment from outside the company of a person with knowledge, experience or contacts which will be useful to the company. Being a director is a professional job in its own right and each director needs to be able to allocate sufficient time to directorship matters so they are able to do the job well. Good corporate governance reaches into the whole organisation, it is not just a matter for the directors.
