ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the roles that are to be seen in the sector as a whole, and the resources available to support them, as an indication of what is possible and what is not. The pressure group role, whose respectability some organisations try to improve by calling it 'social advocacy'. Barnardos' central organisation is responsible for the provision of its residential homes and of places in day care centres and would be included: on the other hand, the home visitation of the elderly undertaken by volunteers working with local Age Concern organisations would not be credited to Age Concern England. The CEO's position is nearer to that of the Managing Director of a company, but different in that he is not on the board. CHSA is very straightforward in its policy on these personal services. The CEO has therefore a uniquely middle-man role which is not always appreciated either by committee on the one side or staff on the other.
