ABSTRACT

The Mastery Transcript Consortium (MTC) is one of the leading programs in the United States working to transform the secondary school transcript to one that credits competencies rather than courses or Carnegie units. The MTC calls their credits “mastery credits.” The MTC was launched in 2016, and this chapter recounts the origins of this consortium, its founding vision, its core principles, and what it hopes to accomplish for students and learning. A critique of the MTC principles is also provided, looking at potential flaws or limitations to its new transcript model and its guiding principles, including the question of whether there is an insufficient common core or mandated core curriculum in the MTC model.
