ABSTRACT

The victors judged the Nuremberg defendants. In Eichmann’s case, the judges acted for the state of Israel. Trying Eichmann in Israel was controversial, but the Israelis used the 1950 Nazi and Nazi Collaborators’ Punishment Law as the legal basis for the charges. The most well-known trials were those of the major Nazi war criminals held at Nuremberg and the trial of Adolf Eichmann held in Israel. In addition, at the end of 1944, the legal office of the United States War Department directed the military to form units to gather evidence of criminal behavior by Nazi perpetrators and collaborators. Charges were filed against Nazi leaders as well as against Nazi organizations. Norway tried Nazis and collaborators, including the Prime Minister. Courts in The Netherlands convicted 14,562 people from 1945 to 1950. Trial outcomes in Romania resulted in the execution of Prime Minister Ion Antonescu.
