ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some issues that tend to manifest during the particular time in life and considers the ways in which social workers can help young adults who face problems. It explains many individuals with serious mental illnesses exhibit initial symptoms in early adulthood. The chapter discusses two issues that may impact the well-being of young adults: relationships and living arrangements, and domestic violence. It looks at some of the laws and policies in place to help avoid discriminatory actions based on race or ethnicity. Many of the processes of cognitive development that occur earlier in life begin to stabilize during young adulthood. Schizophrenia is an example of a mental illness whose symptoms tend to exhibit themselves in late adolescence or early adulthood. Social workers can educate law-makers and policy-makers about the sources and effects of sexism as well as ways in which to design laws and policies to help end it.
