ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the issues surrounding senescence, or the process of aging. It explains these issues from the perspective of the medical model because they tend to be biological in nature. Social workers need to be leaders in correcting myths and stereotypes about sexuality in old age and educating clients and others about the importance of continued sexual intimacy as they age. In the United States and in other countries, some care facilities cater to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) older adults or at least provide services geared toward supporting people in older population. Social workers need to be aware of the various issues that can create potential problems for older LGBTQ clients. Social workers need to be aware of emerging trends in dealing with death, grief, and dying to help connect clients with resources and alternative ways of viewing their options and situations.
