ABSTRACT

One of Trump's first acts as president was the signing of an executive order in an attempt to implement a 'travel ban' targeting certain Muslim-majority nations. It was not until late in 2017 that The United States Supreme Court ruled that the ban could be imposed while multiple court cases challenging it are resolved. The chapter discusses the immigration plan announced in Trump's 2018 State of the Union address and focuses on what immigration policies look like on the ground. It also discusses how Trump's racist/fascistic discourse acted as a public pedagogy of hate, with reference to his speeches and his agenda, first with respect to 'the wall', then to Islamophobia and to Indigenous Americans, before considering his remarks about African Americans and the continent of Africa. It concludes with its emphasis on simplicity, impulsivity, and incivility is an ideal vehicle for the president and his public pedagogy of hate.
