ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by providing a snapshot of global and United States (US) capitalism in 2018, and discusses the year of the mid-term elections, a scenario no less depressing than the growth of hatred and fascism. It addresses the reality of global and US capitalism in 2018. United Nations Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights Philip Alston spent two weeks in December 2017 visiting the US to look at whether the persistence of extreme poverty there undermines the enjoyment of human rights by its citizens. Antifa has been very successful since Donald Trump's election in challenging the alt-right, and in curtailing its ability to promote its fascist views both with respect to conventional institutional pedagogy and by public pedagogy. The chapter examines the reality of global and US capitalism in 2018, with respect to inequality and poverty.
