ABSTRACT

This chapter will introduce the Orang Asli – the indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia – by exploring the community’s socio-economic circumstances in contemporary Malaysia. In this regard, it will provide a social profile of the Orang Asli with respect to geography, education, socio-economic conditions, and health – benefitting readers yet unacquainted with the community. Furthermore, this chapter briefly introduces the Klang Valley region – Malaysia’s most urbanised space – and the area within which the Orang Asli individuals mentioned in this book have migrated to for work.
