ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the key themes with further reflections from our meta-analysis of coaching as a global phenomenon. The assumption that coaching is performance enhancing is one that has been transferred from the world of sport. The reference to coaching not addressing ‘soft’ issues in organisations is another assumption that needs further scrutiny, given that coaching is adopted in many organisations to develop the organisation’s future leadership pipeline. An initial unsystematic review of the literature using the keyword ‘coach education’ in Google Scholar identified a rather limited set of academic papers on the theme of coach education. A final reflection here on why coach education, aimed at coaches operating outside the world of sport, as distinct from coach development is something that appears to have been discussed as a potential issue in other work is perhaps a reflection of the diversity of routes by which individuals become coaches.
