ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 briefly explains how to find legal materials. A non-exhaustive list of these legal materials include statutes, regulations, and judicial decisions at both the federal and state levels; both federal and state executive orders; law review articles and other commentary; comments made on legislation by members of Congress or state legislatures; and local ordinances and rules. It explains the difference between primary and secondary sources. Selected electronic databases, both governmental and private, are discussed. The arcane art of reading judicial opinions is explained. The highly structured nature of judicial opinions is introduced.
