ABSTRACT

This chapter walks the reader through seven mediators of mourning that could impact the mourning and grief process of clients. They were originally intended as a complement to the four tasks of mourning and can help explain why some people might struggle in some tasks more than others. They can also explain why some sail through the tasks with seeming ease. Placing the mediators of mourning into the context of addiction and recovery yields important considerations. Depending on one’s circumstances, grief processes will change. Each mediator is presented and discussed in its original context and then considered in the context of addiction and recovery. Recommendations for conversation starters are infused throughout.
