ABSTRACT

This chapter presents three growth-oriented models of bereavement as applied to addiction and recovery. First, the conceptual model of positive outcomes of life crises is discussed with emphasis on the idea that a significant loss can be the trigger-point for increased coping skills and personal growth. The model of loss resolution and growth is also included with emphasis on the idea that grief work was self-work and that with loss, one has the opportunity to redefine themselves. Finally, the model of family bereavement and mourning is detailed with a focus on the relational aspects of grief and the family response to bereavement. Talking points, examples, and suggestions for counselors are infused throughout.
