ABSTRACT

This chapter encourages readers to consider losses on a timeline: pre-addiction, during addiction, and during treatment and recovery. Addiction-related losses are discussed throughout the chapter along with suggested discussion points for counselors. Examples of such losses include loss of control, safety, a substance or behavior (i.e. shopping), identity, physical appearance, relationships, financial stress, freedom, custody, death, pregnancy loss, and more. Each loss category is considered separately with examples provided throughout along with specific considerations for each. The chapter closes with a continuation of the client case application, detailing the losses in his case and how they connected to his addictive behaviors.
