ABSTRACT

The Hoffman Report investigated and found culpable the actions of senior APA leaders regarding alleged collusion with and participation in the military’s torture practices. But the larger problem is that the many were unable or unwilling to see through and stop the deceptions and betrayals of the few. This article explores why these events came to pass and proposes changes to the profession’s dominant philosophy of science and APA accreditation standards regarding doctoral curricula and instruction. Changes include in-depth training in historical consciousness, moral and ethical discourse, and psychodynamic relational practice.
