ABSTRACT

Categorical relations make thought and communication possible. Designative theories, those which make designation fundamental, make meaning something relatively unpuzzling, unmysterious. That is a great part of their appeal. The meaning of words or sentences is explained by their relation to things or states of affairs in the world. Bucci encourages people to think about psychoanalysis as the promotion of new experiential organizations, created by linking sub-symbolically encoded emotion that has been kept isolated from verbal and nonverbal symbolic modes of representation for unconscious defensive reasons. The simplicity and comprehensiveness of the concept of emotional meaning are appealing. Most of the researchers who subscribe to the information processing model and other designative theories of language are students of cognitive science. Many are experimental psychologists and cognitive neuroscientists. Modularity is a design strategy that breaks complex wholes into elementary units that are understood to be recombinable into a variety of different patterns.
