ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the general principles involved in responding appropriately to problematic behaviour. It explains the specific steps required for constructing effective and ethically acceptable responses to problematic behaviour as part of a broader intervention strategy for change. Problematic behaviour can arouse strong emotions in carers, particularly if they feel that the behaviour is directed at them personally. The person who shows the problematic behaviour is, thus, in a vulnerable position. This is reason why finding a consistent and planned response to a problematic behaviour is essential. Having decided on the response which will be given to the problematic behaviour, details must be worked out for the method of implementing the response. Differential reinforcement programme which includes a planned response to a problematic behaviour: the response is based on the 'default' low-key approach. Identify positive intervention into which response to problematic behaviour is to be incorporated.
