ABSTRACT

Queer Theologies: The Basics is an accessible guidebook which provides an overview of the thoughts, contexts, and scholarship in the area known as queer theology. Throughout, the term ‘theologies’ is used in the plural, in order to highlight how queer theologies cover a range of thoughts and approaches. This introduction sets out the aims and purposes of the book. Practical advice is offered to the reader in how to use the book effectively, including its scope and suggestions for how to move ‘beyond the basics’. To whet the appetite of the reader, brief consideration is given to three questions: (1) What is queer? (2) What is theology? and (3) Why are queer theologies important? The chapter concludes with a reflection on queer religious literacy, which allows for informed discussion and encourages people to engage and empathise with others’ positions.
