ABSTRACT
This chapter traces the development of queer theologies by exploring three important turns in contextual theologies in the twenty-first century. The chapter offers brief sketches of liberation, feminist, and gay and lesbian theologies and demonstrates their emergence against a backdrop of social and political activism. The chapter considers a variety of important theoretical perspectives, including feminism, womanism, post-structuralism, and postmodernism, as philosophical thought in these areas has contributed to the rise of queer theory. Finally, the chapter draws attention to concerns around queer theory and queer theologies as largely intellectual activities that do not reflect their emergence from grassroots movements.
