ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the validity of combining phonological rules with word formation rules (WFRs) in the lexicon as suggested by lexical phonology. Another issue concern in this chapter is the problem of the cyclic application of phonological rules which follows from adopting the principle of strict cyclicity. The chapter considers some aspects of the application of the lexical framework to the analysis of English. It focuses on one possible approach to the reapplication of rules which involves the principle of strict cyclicity. A different approach to cyclicity is represented by Halle whose proposal on the phonology side is largely based on Halle and Mohanan. According to Rubach palatalization in Polish is a cyclic rule. Its cyclicity can be seen in the fact that it applies only when the consonant subject to the rule and the conditioning front vowel are found on the opposite sides of the morpheme boundary, i.e., when the derived environment condition is fulfilled.
