ABSTRACT

One of the distinguishing features of anti-museum variants is the impossibility of knowing what to expect in advance of visiting them for the first time. They are also more of a challenge to find. They seldom hang out in the same inner-city cultural precincts favoured by conventional institutions, and Art42 is no exception. Being relatively new on the Paris art scene there was not a great deal of information available about Art42, and their website gave very little away. In fact, apart from a list of list of prominent street artists featured in their collection, there were absolutely no grand claims, self-descriptions, motherhood statements or aspirations littering their site. Arriving at its address at 96 Boulevard Bessieres, one sees no evidence of a museum: there is no sign, no grand portico. The building it occupies is not an art institution, but a high school.
