ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the process, the contestations and the implemented initiatives in context of the equity framework to conclude the discussion in the context of Ahmedabad and to suggest a way forward in the context of the larger discourse of heritage and democracy. In all the cases studied in Ahmedabad, procedural equity through engagement of various groups of people is key to upholding values of heritage that are important to sustainable development. The equity principles by G. McGranahan and D. Satterthwaite cut through the development disparity biases globally and have proven to be a useful tool to study and implement sustainable development goals. The attitude needs to undergo an ethical shift by giving more agency of knowledge and of procedure to the inhabitants. Heritage of historic cities, for them to contribute to sustainable development and for them to have a sense of ownership among all stakeholders, needs to be understood for its attributes with reference to equity principles.
