ABSTRACT

In 1592, a Japanese army set out to conquer both Korea and China. The result was a conflict unparalleled in the three centuries before or after. This book uses the accounts of diverse individuals who lived through the war to explore how they saw the war, and the narratives they used to understand it. This chapter explains the book’s particular focus on narratives of ‘China’, ‘Korea’, and ‘Japan’, introduces the individuals whose accounts are studied, and concludes with an outline history of the war of 1592–1598.
