ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 introduces different theoretical perspectives on communication which are relevant when communicating well with the Other. Aristotle’s rhetorics and his differentiation between ethos, logos and pathos has similarities to Red, Blue and Green. The Sender–Receiver model, which has been central in many Scandinavian writers, is expanded with systemic and contextual perspectives. Dialogue is contrasted in relation to discourse and debate. Trialogue is the next step after monologue and dialogue. At the end of this chapter, the capability of reflecting on the processes of learning is suggested as an important element in solving grand global problems, both by dignified processes, as well as high quality problem solving and decision making. The chapter ends with reflections on ethical norms for communicative practice – a practice that can inspire and guide personal and collective commitment.
