Chapter 8 covers the Sixth Amendment right to counsel—including when the right attaches; the right to court appointment of counsel; the right to the assistance of counsel in pre- and post-trial proceedings; the right to effective assistance; the right to engage in self-representation; and Sixth Amendment restrictions on the conduct of the police. The second half of the chapter covers pretrial identification procedures and the constitutional requirements for conducting them.
