ABSTRACT

Attention to young children’s personal social and emotional development has to be a priority, bathed in an environment of love recognition and support two-year-old children will grow into resilient and self-assured adults. The emotional bonds two-year-old children develop with their parents, and other caregivers are crucial for their personal, social and emotional development. A young child with a secure attachment feels able to rely on their parents or caregivers for safety and comfort. Two-year-old children use the meaningful attachment relationships as bases from which to explore the world. Attachment theory is often associated with babies and very young children. However, the implications of attachment theory can apply to any point throughout a young person’s life. Initial attachments are formed as parents spend time smiling, cooing, cuddling, touching and soothing their babies. Unfortunately, some factors can prevent parents from being emotionally available to display the required attachment responses.
