ABSTRACT

In considering the relations of Africa with other parts of the globe the fact cannot be overlooked that though from prehistoric times onwards foreign peoples have again and again migrated into Africa, yet the Africans have never of their own accord advanced beyond the boundaries of their continent. Naturally immigrations often also set indigenous tribes in motion, and migrations took place at all periods within Africa itself. Indeed, the foreign immigrants adapted themselves in their mode of life and even in their appearance to the indigenous population to such an extent that they themselves became Africans. Among the pre-European foreign invasions of Africa that of Islam is the one which in recent times has brought about the most visible changes in the social and political as well as in the religious life of a large part of the continent. Governments, missions, and economic activity are the three powers which more than others are responsible for the disintegration of Africa.
