ABSTRACT

Client and therapist discuss what has happened, and what can be learned from the exercise and any follow-up that makes sense in relation to it. Introducing chair work, that is, inviting the client to address the absent person by imagining them in a chair in the room can be helpful. Some therapists record the sessions with their client and let the client take away the tape to listen to. As they then listen to the tape of the session the client is asked to make notes about points that strike them as significant in some way. Some therapists will make use of different shaped stones to get a picture of the client’s relationships. They ask the client to choose a stone for each person and to say why they have chosen that one. The different sizes and shapes give plenty of choice to the client as they remind them of significant others in their lives.
