ABSTRACT

The concept of a dream within a dream is fascinating. The dream within a dream that is scrutinized here occurred in the eighth year of an analysis, a clinical context that allowed the topic to be viewed through the lens of a complex transference neurosis. The dream thoughts beneath the manifest content of both segments of the dream sequence could be summarized as follows: The child “delivered” to the house at an “odd” hour is the wish to have a child in the primal scene. If a dream is also “a part of the night”, this will be an attempt to light a semiotic candle in the darkness. The manifest content of a dream is designed as a clever cover-up of latent objectionable desire. Sigmund Freud emphasized that the function of placing a piece of reality in a dream within a dream is an attempt to rob it of its significance and obliterate it.
