ABSTRACT
In spite of the gap between the two disciplines having widened during the past century, both psychoanalysis and psychiatry still need to form a diagnosis when faced with a psychotic subject, although not for the same reasons. In psychoanalysis, the establishment of diagnosis must be linked to an orientation for the treatment, whereas, as is shown below, the same does not necessarily apply to modern psychiatry.
