ABSTRACT

The major change Dorothy Heard and Brian Lake made was to distinguish more clearly the difference between the two forms of interest sharing: the exploratory form, which was distinguished first, and the non-exploratory form. Comparing the interest sharing system with the attachment and the caregiving systems clearly differentiates the special qualities of the interest sharing system. Furthermore, the interest sharing system can function effectively without anyone showing empathy, although when one or more members of an interest sharing group are able to relate with empathy, the group will reach its aims more effectively. The differences between the attachment/caregiving system and the interest sharing systems are shown more clearly by comparing differences between the functions of the attachment system and the system for interest sharing with peers. Whenever a self shows exploratory interest sharing, it is discovering new factors about the interest. The activity of exploring an interest, or the skill that enables a self to express the interest, requires creativity.
