ABSTRACT

Psychoanalysis is not a form of psychosurgery. It does not extirpate bad feelings. Bad feelings come with being alive. Every one of us must deal with grief, envy, disappointment, the other painful experiences that have been discussed in the chapters of this book, and many more as well. That we can often defend successfully against experiencing these bad feelings consciously does not enable us to lead untroubled lives, for a price is paid for heavy reliance on this emotional tactic: impoverishment of liveliness in the internal world and in personal relations with others.
