ABSTRACT

The basic emotions have evolved over the course of millennia, and they continue to play a significant role in the lives. By the very nature of the basic emotions and the fact that the right hemisphere processes sensory inputs more quickly than the left hemisphere, the L-mind only becomes aware of a sensory input that has triggered an emotional response after becoming aware of that response. Psychologists have seen that when faced with behaviour initiated by the R-mind, and lacking access to the thoughts that led to that behaviour, the L-mind confabulates. The attention of the R-mind to particular sensory inputs is brought about by basic emotions, which are evolved responses to specific stimuli, and vary in intensity. One can make a conscious decision to pay attention to one particular sense, such as sight, or to one particular area within, say, the visual scene.
