ABSTRACT

Mind, consciousness and experience have been "rediscovered" by science, and have become not only a permissible but also an exciting and "hot" domain for discovery. The cognitive revolution has been accompanied by another upheaval in science which has also supported research into consciousness and experience. As body was disregarded in favour of mind, so emotion has long been disregarded in favour of cognition and rationality. Emotion is now seen as the mechanism that enables the organism to adapt physiologically, psychologically and behaviourally in response to environmental challenges. Free and flexible flow of emotions is necessary for mental and physical health. Dysfunctional development of emotional regulation may result in damage to the development of neuronal networks and biochemical functions as well as to psychological outlook, leaving permanent damage to both physiology and functioning, in particular an inability to regulate high stress states.
