ABSTRACT

Professionally trained staff employed by the councils and counties who are mentioned in the section "Professionals Involved in Family Support", there are some offers of assistance available to public that may be of value for premature children with delayed handicaps. Even though the children as a rule are monitored by the children's outpatient department during their first year, there are still important tasks involving the family's General Practitioner. Family group conference gives the child a key role. It becomes "visible" in both the investigational phase and the decision phase, and decisions are not made over the head of the child. At family group conferences the family can be supported internally by the necessary openness and the objective support given by the professionals to help maintain focus upon the child and its difficulties. Families with a handicapped child should by law be financially equal to other families.
