ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the basic and predominant theories concerning memory and to explain memory functions in relation to the triune brain model in order to demonstrate how various memory function present at different mental organization levels in the hierarchical structure of the brain. It looks at the way memory collects in schema-based memory units or general mentalized representations. Personality formation and the potential for continued development rely completely on stored complex memory information and memory chains that can be recognized and drawn into conscious awareness as the situation requires. The neural networks combine information in the present with patterns stored in the past, and the resulting mix is what the network "remembers". Regardless of what mental organization level a given memory system is located on, it appears to be the same neural basis that enables both learning and memory. The mentalization capacity is closely linked to language.
