ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents the case of Lucy. She notices that Lucy became more energised at her suggestion that she create "a safe place", having seemed quite low in energy previously. Joy Schaverien talks of the "frame within the frame"–the frame of an image within the frame of the therapeutic space within the frame of the therapeutic relationship. The special bond between a client and therapist grows and changes over time. The interactions between a therapist and client take place within what Daniel Stern calls an intersubjective matrix. It is clear that there is an intersubjective matrix within which the therapist–client relationship takes place. This chapter argues that there is something about the triangular relationship that has a chameleon-like ability to shift relational fields–to tilt on many axes. Nathan Schwartz-Salent believes that the unconscious dynamic between people in a relationship contributes a realm where "more than apparently harmless creatures lurk in the forest".
